The New York Times today concluded a three-part series on the management of sex offenders. The article summed up the role of polygraphy in one brief paragraph, as follows:

"But polygraphy, which measures blood pressure, breathing rate and perspiration while a series of questions is asked, is generally considered so unreliable that its results are inadmissible as proof in court. Some offenders, especially psychopaths who feel no anxiety when lying, can beat it, experts said."

Is there an opportunity here for the APA to shed a little light on the subject? It is indeed frustrating to see the myths of polygraphy perpetuated ad infinitum.

I'm surprised Georgie hasn't picked up on this yet...
